WASTE WATER TREATMENT (WWTP)

4 billion people lack basic sanitation services and more than 80% of the waste water used by humans is discharged into rivers and seas without previous treatment, leading to pollution that threatens people's lives and biodiversity — and erodes sustainable development.

To overcome this serious problem, and to contribute to the achievement of 2030 Agenda, ACCIONA is planning optimal water purification solutions based on its experience and innovative potential.

With a minimum installation costs, it adapts its projects to a variety of settings such as:

  • populations of very different size
  • urban domestic or industrial high-load water
  • populations with strong seasonal variations
  • plants located where little space available
  • waste water treatment plants with a high visible and/or environmental impact
  • plants with different discharge levels

ACCIONA has designed and built over 300 waste water treatment plants across a broad range of geographical settings, ranging from small cities to mega-cities. The water infrastructures of Atotonilco (Mexico), Kawana (Australia), North Shore (Canada) and Gabal Al Asfar (Egypt) reflect the company's overall capacity to address the challenges of waste water treatment in every corner of the planet. In Middle East, the three waste water treatment plants Madinah-3, Buraydah-2 and Tabuk-2 de KSA will have a total capacity of more than 440,000 m3/day, representing a population equivalent to more than 2.1 million inhabitants.

The 300 waste water treatment plants have a total capacity of more than 15 million m3/day, representing a population equivalent to more than 57 million inhabitants.

WHAT IS WATER PURIFICATION?

Wastewater treatment consists of a series of physical, chemical and biological processes that remove pollutants from water so that it can be used by humans.
